BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

This original farmhouse was part of one of the local farms owned by the Geiger family who immigrated from Berwangen, Northern Kraichgau, Germany to Central PA in 1749. Geigerstown in Robeson Township, Berks County, PA was named after Paul Geiger (1698-1754).

Another Geiger family with Robeson Township roots descends from three brothers from Ittlingen Germany who came America in 1717 with Rev. Anthony Jacob Henckel, the first Lutheran minister in America. One of the descendants of Rev. Henckel's daughter and her husband, Valentine Geiger, married a Robeson and was very prominent in the township

UNION TOWNSHIP

Union Township was established in 1753. The Township was purchased in the early 1700s by a treaty between the local Native Americans and the sons of William Penn. Swedes and Germans were the first to settle in the township.

The first known settlement was in 1705. There were an estimated 62 taxable persons in 1759. In 2000, the Township had about 3,500 residents.

Union Township has several historical structures:

Hopewell Furnace built in 1765. It played an important role in the Revolution.

St. Paul’s Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1773. It is recognized as the oldest Methodist Church in Berks County and the third oldest in the US.

St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Mission Church built in the 1840s.

St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church built in 1850.

Other trails offered at nearby 4,475 acre French Creek State Park are for hiking and biking. The area is also well known for its fishing and birdwatching.

The surrounding area boasts a rich history with the nearby Daniel Boone Homestead, Conrad Weiser House and Hay Creek Valley Historic Site to name a few.
